the
report that the question of possibility of providing accommodation outside of the present prison for short sentence prisoners has again received the careful consideration of this Government, but no suitable private buildings can be found. The principal objection to all private buildings is the absolute want of any space connected therewith for enclosure. The high value of ground in the City means the yards attached to houses are extremely limited in area.
The Surveyor-General reports that the best way of carrying out the recommendation of Mr. Secretary Stanhope would be to build one of the blocks already on the site of the New Prison which has been set apart for that purpose. This, however, would involve an expenditure of about $100,000 for which no provision can at present be made.
